Hotels

Hilton at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton

Botley Rd, West End, Southampton SO30 3XH, UK – 023 8202 0900

Room 245 overlooks the car park not the pitches. Bed was two singles pushed together to make a super king sized bed, but the ridges from the edges of the single mattresses made the middle of the bed uncomfortable. The metal flap by the door is supposed to be used to stop people getting into the room (like a door chain) but was attached to the architrave and had obviously been used before as the architrave came off the wall very easily when I pulled it. As it was only held on by half a dozen panel pins, I'm not surprised it came off. Don't assume your safety is enhanced when using this, one good push and someone would be in your room. Breakfast was standard buffet affair, but was hot and nicely cooked.

Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights, the first privately the second with a work conference. The staff were helpful, the room i stayed in was exceptional. Servce all round was top drawer. Will definitely return.

Holiday Inn Express Southampton

Botley Rd, M27, JCT.7, West End, Southampton SO30 3XA, UK – 0871 942 9037

lovely place to stay right next to the cricket ground. not far from the centre of Southampton and very easy to get too. lovely clean rooms very modern. the staff are very polite and helpful.

We stayed twice. The first time was when we took our son to see Southampton Solent university. This hotel is such good value, the staff are helpful and the facilities and surroundings, so clean and modern. The room rate was excellent value. More recently we wanted a base to stay whilst on a trip to the Isle of Wight. This was ideal. We took both our children and were provided with an interconnecting room. No real complaints except it would have been useful to have had a mini fridge would have been beneficial, particularly in the Summer and biscuits with the tea/coffee. The buffet breakfast included the basic items you would expect, hot and cold, but the staff were rather quick to take away dishes when nearing the closing time, even though we were not late down for breakfast. We had to ask for eggs and sausages to be brought back out, which they duly obliged. Overall I thoroughly recommend for either pleasure or business. it must be fantastic if you need a place near the cricket!

Premier Inn Southampton City Centre

6 New Rd, Southampton SO14 0AB, UK – 0871 527 9000

Typical Premier Inn, but what set this apart were the staff. The night manager during our stay was particularly attentive and friendly, which made the stay all the more enjoyable. Location of the hotel is convenient for the city centre and student suburbs like Portswood. The rooms backs onto a railway line, which didn't bother me but it could bother others to ask for one facing the other way if you're a light sleeper. Not a wide selection at breakfast but I think what they provided was good quality. Would happily stay here again.

Very central, easy to get to. Room is spacious, comfy and clean. The food offer is also very reasonable. Overall a good stay. Though the only down side is very limited car parking space. Have to be early to get a spot!

Pubs, Gastro Pubs and Bars

The Gordon Arms

113 Portswood Rd, Southampton SO17 2FU, UK

Reasonable bar, only takes cash but not too expensive. Fairly standard

Great pub, never had a bad pint. Very relaxed atmosphere and a lovely owner.

The Cricketers Arms

50 Portsmouth Rd, Southampton SO19 9AF, UK – 023 8044 2245

My car engine light had been on a couple minutes and the back fired. Pulled into the pub and went inside. Was met by a lovely lady who asked what I'd like. A cup of tea please I need a cup of tea. We don't really sell tea she said but seeing my distress said it's ok I'll make you a cup and promptly went of and made me a perfect cup. What a real life angel. Thank you for making me believe in the human race again Highly recommend the pub.

Excellent service, paying attention to guests, nice music and atmosphere. Attentive bartenders. Coming back for sure

The White Star Tavern

28 Oxford St, Southampton SO14 3DJ, UK – 023 8082 1990

Went here first with my family for my birthday the staff were really friendly, then went back for lunch with another friend, the best fish and chips ever, so I recommend to a friend who went today 12/1/18 who also throughly enjoyed their meal today Well done to staff and chef

Nice rooms in good location but service at breakfast lost this place a star. Would recommend for overnight stay before setting off on cruise as in our case.

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

A lovely place to stay. A friendly family with perfect access to the motor way. I recommend this B&B to all.

As allways you get what you are paying for. But i think in this case a bit more. Really nice breakfast, the landlady was really friendly. Maybe not the most top modern b&b, but if you want a good night sleep and a nice breakfast for a low price i do recomend twin oaks guesthouse.

Heather Gables Guest Accommodation

Dodwell Ln, Hedge End, Southampton SO31 1DJ, UK – 023 8040 4925

Lovely house and gardens. Great breakfast and nice people.

Lovely gardens at the back. Excellent breakfast - taste and presentation and the morning papers are a nice touch. Friendly hosts, clean rooms, albeit a little cramped. Balcony a bonus.

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!
